PILOT PROJECT ON GS1 NUMBERING AND BAR CODING APPLICATION IN TRADING OF ORGANIC FOODS IN GMS DUE TO ADB TA-8163 PROJECT

Under the GMS (Great Mekong Sub regions) program financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) (TA-8163 Project), member states in the sub region Developed and approved a Strategy for the Development of Safe and Environmental Friendly Agricultural Product Stocks at GMS (SEAP Strategy), approved by the Ministers of Agriculture of Member States in Siem Reap, Cambodia on September 8th 2017.

To kick off the implementation of the SEAP Strategy, during the period from now to June 2018, TA-8163 will provide technical assistance to GMS countries to pilot food tracing implementation using GS1 standards in product traceability at international and domestic scale.

The project consists of 3 phases:

Stage 1 – In-country stakeholder consultation;

Phase 2 – Capacity building training course;

Stage 3 – Pilot implementation.

The national consultation meeting will be held on January 18th, 2018 in Hanoi with the aim of identifying one typical value chain for the program, identifying the need and willingness to deploy the traceability system, defining requirements for facilities, capabilities and investment items.

This consultation meeting is also an opportunity for GS1 (through GS1 Global Office and GS1 Vietnam Office) to convey and analyze the benefits, requirements and costs required to invest in one value chain through one lead company implementing this system, operating costs, to answer questions and problems that enterprises need to know before determining the feasibility and decide to implement the system.
